I THINK that if it was totaled (meaning the insurance company paid the original title holder the policy value) then the only title you can get is the "theft recovery" one. Kind of like having a salvage vehicle title. It is a valid title, just was issued once it was recovered. Understand that voiding a title by the state or DMV renders the vehicle unusable in the US. (supposedly) and once it is repaired or recovered a title has to be reissued and it can't very easily be a title for a new or used vehicle.
